The Golden Rules of Firearms Safety
- Always prove a firearm is unloaded whenever you pick it up, take it from anyone, or hand it to anyone.
- Always point the firearm at your own target only.
- Never place your finger on the trigger until you are ready to shoot.
- Never point a firearm at anyone.
Range Safety and Operation
Personal protective equipment
Suitable eye and ear protection must be in place before entering the range area.
Carrying firearms on the premises
- Firearms must be cased when moving around the premises.
- Firearms may only be removed from their case once you are at the firing bench.
- Firearms and ammunition must be cased again before being removed from the bench.
- No firearms are to be handled behind the firing points.
Going forward of the firing points
No one may go forward of the firing points unless specifically authorised, and they must be supervised by a staff member.
Supervision of under-18s
Targets
- Targets may only be used at the full 20 m length of the range.
- Only targets provided or approved by Mayfair Shooting Centre may be used.
- Always shoot at a paper target correctly hanging from the cardboard backer provided.
Target retrieval system
Shooters are not permitted to interfere with the target retrieval system. Report any issues to a staff member.
Reporting problems
Any problems must be reported to staff without delay.
Cleaning up after firing
Shooters are responsible for clearing the immediate area around their bench after firing:
- Centre-fire cases must be collected and taken away.
- Rimfire cases must be collected and deposited in the trays provided.
Emergency exit
The range emergency exit is on the left-hand side of the range, 10 m down the wall from lane 1.
Firearms and Ammunition
Shooter responsibility
- All shooters are responsible for ensuring their firearms and ammunition are safe to use.
- All shooters must be familiar with the safe operation of their firearms.
- Firearms and ammunition must be made available for inspection and testing if requested by Mayfair Shooting Centre staff.
Ammunition purchased on the premises
Ammunition purchased for use at the range must not be taken off the premises unless it is entered onto your Firearm Certificate (FAC).
Permitted limits
Ammunition used on the range must not exceed the muzzle energy or muzzle velocity stated on the range template:
- Maximum muzzle energy (ME): 475 ft/lbs
- Maximum muzzle velocity (MV): 1,700 fps
- Exception: the 1,700 fps velocity limit does not apply to .17 HMR.
Prohibited ammunition
Muzzle-loading firearms
Muzzle-loaders are subject to additional rules:
- Maximum calibre: .50.
- Loads must reach the minimum velocity for their calibre, as listed below.
Minimum velocities for muzzle-loading firearms:

Fire Procedure (Members and Visitors)
The alarm
The fire alarm is audible throughout the building and is both audible and visual on the range.
What to do
- Leave the building via the closest exit.
- If you are shooting or handling firearms or ammunition: put them down on the shooting bench and leave. Do not attempt to unload or make safe.
- Do not take firearms with you.
- Push in the clear plastic face of the alarm button next to the door you exit from.
- Do not attempt to fight the fire.
Assembly points
Go to the appropriate fire assembly point depending on which exit you used:
- Front door: the grassed area opposite the front door.
- Range exit: the farthest corner of the courtyard (top right corner).
After leaving the building
- As soon as it is safe to do so, advise a staff member of any firearms you have left in the building, and where they are.
